Maximize Your Experience as a Virtual Intern

Updated: Oct 16, 2021

While Internship programs have been constantly evolving over the years, virtual internships are now the new normal. Many people were disappointed when they found out their internship had gone virtual but I think it is a blessing in disguise. Opportunity is always disguised as disappointment. To those whose internships were converted to virtual programs remember:

1. A lot of companies completely cut their internship programs and rescinded all internship offers.

2. If a company is going to develop an engaging internship program to ensure they’re investing in top talent, that is a good sign. It goes to show that your company does not just care about recruitment but also RETENTION and employee satisfaction.

3. We live in a global world. Business is 24/7 and most business is conducted via technology. Remote work is the future.

Virtual Internship programs are actually very enjoyable experiences. Many companies are sending their interns their welcome packages along with their laptop and additional technology that will be utilized such as an additional monitor. Virtual interns are still getting paid despite being remote. Virtual Interns are really experiencing the future of Corporate America, which is flex work, flexible scheduling, flexible attire, flexible location.

The downside of virtual internship programs is that interns (especially those who are first-time interns at the company they work for) feel like they won’t get the authentic intern experience. Yes, you may not be physically in the office nor do you have a desk nor do you go to in-person meetings, but you still are very much a part of the company.

As a virtual Intern consider taking these 6 tips to maximize your experience and truly get a taste of the company culture:

  1. Set goals with your manager. This will show you are taking the initiative to set SMART goals and create steps to achieve them. This will definitely bode well when it is time for your performance review. Performance reviews are incredibly important and can determine future employment opportunities post grad.

  2. Ask your coworker to go on a virtual lunch together. A virtual lunch can be conducted via zoom and essentially you and the person each lunch together. A virtual lunch can be a great opportunity to network and ask questions about company culture.

  3. Ask questions! There is no such thing as a stupid question. The only stupid questions are the ones that are not asked.

  4. Whoever you meet in the company, It is important to follow up with them via email and connect with them on LinkedIn. As an intern, you are exposed to a lot of people throughout the company. Use this opportunity to expand your professional network.

  5. Take initiative! Interns have skills that tenured employees don’t. Do not sell yourself short. You bring a new perspective and skill set. Do not be afraid to give suggestions to enhance business processes.

  6. Remember to ALWAYS comply with Corporate policies especially confidentiality , Non-Disclosure Agreements, and Social Media Guidelines.
